I love soccer, but I really hate when people mess up a beautiful game, if your team loses they lost and that's it! Next time just do better! Sport and politics do not mix! Politicians should just mind their f@&$ing business and let people play the sport that we all love, they should events like this away from comunist countries, and have it in countries where you don't have dumb ass dictators f@&$ing the whole game up, POLITICIANS LEAVE SOCCER ALONE, and let them play their game!!!!!!!!!!!!! GROW UP!!!!!!!!!!!

I am smitten by the lack of interest in international football here on this site. I could be mistaken assuming everyone's internet connection just coincidently died as of late, but it seems once the Premiership goes under the radar football no longer exists. A discussion concerning the big four in England draws a huge crowd but World Cup.... the dwindling numbers. Not a complaint so much as an observation. Or is it because England's qualifier is midweek?

@Daniel - to be fair, the problems about the Olympics were about the problems the world has with the Chinese government's policies as opposed to any problems on the ground.

Ok, there was the smog :)

Every World Cup has its conceived pre-tournament scares and problems. As a Korean I was never thrilled about co-hosting the 2002 World Cup because I believe that only one country should host the tournament. That decision to have it co-hosted came down to politics within FIFA as Germany lent Korea its support with the understanding that this support would be subject to reciprocity for 2006 (FIFA Vice-President Chung Mong Joon sits on the committee). The logistical problems were probably true, but for Balague of the Guardian to cite that (in reference to what I assume is his blame of Spain's defeat to South Korea in the quarter-finals) is somewhat misleading. Spain had spent the entire tournament in Korea for its group games (against Paraguay, Slovenia and South Africa) and its defeat of Ireland in Suwon. So I'm not sure why he's complaining about a flight from Shizuoka to Gwangju other than perhaps inconveniencing him. But I agree, co-hosting when the countries are not even joined by a landlocked border is ridiculous. So FIFA should just let Korea host it again on its own.

I think this hype about security and crime in South Africa is just that: hype. People were also hesitant about Beijing's 2008 Olympics but it went on without fanfare. South Africa won't be any different. The whole point of a "World Cup" is to really bring it to all parts of the world.
