£50m Ross Barkley shoots to the top of Man Utd’s January wish-list
The Manchester Evening News claim that David Moyes sees Barkley as an ideal January signing as he looks to bolster his flagging midfield.
The 20-year-old has shot to prominence this season, playing in 19 games so far, and putting in a number of dominant, mature displays for Roberto Martinez’ side.
His stunning last-grasp free-kick against Swansea last week earned the Toffees a valuable three points, and he has been touted for a long and distinguished career at the top level.
Martinez recently described his midfield gem as a cross between former German captain Michael Ballack, and the once enigmatic Paul Gascoigne.
David Moyes has struggled to maintain Utd’s omnipotence in the Premier League so far this season, with his midfield clearly lacking in quality and depth.
Barkley would be a shrewd signing, and considering his youth and potential, he could have as much of an impact as Wayne Rooney did when he signed for the club in 2004.
The reported price tag of £50m seems a little steep, despite Barkley’s obvious talent; but this may be irrelevant, as a January move can pretty much be removed from the equation.
Everton are highly unlikely to sanction the sale of one of their very best players only half-way through his first full campaign.
Moyes will surely have to wait until the summer to make a move, but with Barkley’s star continuing to rise, Utd may well be joined by a host of other European giants in the race for the young man’s signature.
