Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers wants a quality defender in the summer transfer window and is reportedly lining-up a move for Southampton’s central defender Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool targeted the 24 year old Croatian defender last summer, but missed out as the former Lyon man opted to move to St Mary’s.  However, he may perhaps be tempted by a move to a Liverpool side who are likely to be able to offer Champions League football to any prospective target next term.

Croatian international Lovren has made 25 appearances for the Saints this season and scored the winner against Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool at Anfield in September.

Liverpool have been scoring plenty of goals this season but have had real trouble in maintaining discipline at the back and there have been question marks over the consistency of both Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, whilst new signing Kolo Toure has been error prone whenever called upon.

Though Liverpool are top of the table, they have conceded an alarming amount of goals and even during their current 13 match unbeaten run they have let in an 16 goals, including three against relegation strugglers Cardiff City and Swansea City.

Lovren has been in outstanding form since moving to the south-coast, though any bid for the Southampton man would have to be in excess of the £8.5m the Saints paid for the tough tackler last June.

Lovren has previously played for GNK Dinamo Zagreb and Olympique Lyonnais, where he won the Coupe de France.

Although born in Bosnia, Lovren has represented Croatia at many levels and has been a full international since 2009. He has gone on to make 19 appearances and score 2 goals for his country although he is yet to represent them in the finals of a major tournament.
