That's especially true for football. Erich Mielke was the head of the Stasi and also chairman of Dynamo Berlin, and he went so far as to fix games so that Dynamo Berlin would always win the East German title. Heck, even Katarina Witt informed for the Stasi. Because figure skating was always a hotbed of political dissent...
